A small family business, Install A Gadget is fronted by Paul Kearns
who boasts over 25 years experience in the 12 volt industry.
Paul qualified as a Marine Mechanic in 1992, which set a solid foundation for his 12 volt knowledge.
He sub-contracted for boat fit-outs for 12 months and in late 1993, completed an Alarm Installers Training Course and became self-employed.
Paul's AUTO SECURITY SERVICE serviced both the private and commercial sectors over 5 years performing mobile installations & repairs of Automotive Alarms & Immobilisers, central locking systems, cruise controls, stereo systems & turbo timers, until late 1998.
At this time, Paul became employed as Installations Services & Training Manager for Marlows Auto Parts & Accessories Fitting & Service Centres.
In this role, Paul designed and implemented Australia's first Nationally Accredited Immobiliser Installation Course, whose attendees included the private sector and Trainees from the Department of Transport.
He also oversaw installers spread over 25 workshops in 3 states, offering technical assistance and training and performed the mobile call out break down service for immobilisers and alarms throughout the Perth Metro area, and assisted Insurance Companies with Claims for Stolen Vehicles.
In 2001, Paul was promoted to Senior Service Manager which, in addition to his regular duties, oversaw all Marlows Western Australian workshops which included monitoring both Installers, Workshop Managers and Mechanics.
Needing a change and wanting to pursue his passion for the RV market, Paul partnered with his wife Kylie to form Install A Gadget in October of 2002.
With Paul’s reputation for knowledge and proud work ethic, Install A Gadget was instantly successful and has been for 15 years.
Consistently in high demand, the business has grown to include nephew Robbie who passed his Traineeship in 2013 with exemplary results.
Keen to enter full time employment and with an interest in electronics Robbie has embraced his roll easily completing his Traineeship at the top of the class.
A little nervous of our new recruit, renowned for being a tad accident prone, Robbie generously leaves this tendency to after hours pursuits.
Like dislocating his shoulder on a sand board, setting his trail bike on fire and falling through a glass door in panic and skin grazing Green Machine downhill accidents.
We think the screw driver versus hand accident taught him a valuable lesson that’s never been repeated and we’re just glad Robbie has managed to turn up to work each week in one piece, happy and healthy. Nice work staying reliable while still having fun!
Each day for Robbie is different and often an installation can be like opening a can of worms. He takes it all in his stride and gets on with the job of cabling, fixing, organising parts, climbing on, in and often under RV’s and testing the final result, which makes installs far more efficient than a one man show. Needless to say Paul isn’t getting any younger so Robbies young legs and energy are most welcome on site.
Robbie has honed his skills and knowledge of 12 volt-ery over his five years with Install A Gadget and has now accomplished the title of a Licensed Individual Motor Vehicle Repairer. Congratulations!
As a small family business, sometimes it’s necessary to perform tasks outside of the box and Robbie has stood bravely in the role of Sales Attendant at Caravan and Camping Shows, which is of huge assistance.
Back at our home office or the mobile workshop off site, Robbie also plays a vital part in keeping things organised and ready for the next job, which sometimes includes custom fabrication of materials.
Robbie is an important and integral employee of Install A Gadget who has lightened the load of our busy business, for which we are very grateful.
Being mentored by a specialist of Paul’s calibre and with natural ability and enthusiasm for 12 volt gadgetry and the RV market, Robbie demonstrates outstanding ability in the 12 volt field. He already possesses the specialist knowledge to rival those well beyond his years and has directly contributed to improving the installation efficiency of Install A Gadget.
We’re pretty sure he enjoys the job ‘cause he keeps turning up!
And we don’t mind hanging out with him outside of work either, he’s a nice bloke!
The newest recruit joining us in May of 2018 is son Jake. Jake came to us keen on meaningful employment and there’s probably not much more meaningful than working for your folks! Jake will follow in Cousin Robbie’s footsteps, undertaking the same Traineeship and on the job training as Paul and Robbie’s right hand man, a role much needed as the business has grown.
The Team is working really well together and we’re looking forward to updating Jake’s progress here in the years to come.
Keeping the administrative cogs of Install A Gadget well oiled is Pauls’ wife Kylie who brings order to this busy business and family using her high-level organisational skills.
